Coca-Cola Employs QR Code and Music in Marketing

Coke QR CodeCoke or Pepsi? That's one of the most popular this-or-that questions people are asked. And that's because the rivalry between these two soda companies has been nothing less than legendary. Much like McDonald's and Burger King's.

And when it comes to advertising, Pepsi's marketing team deserves some credit for utilizing pop stars to endorse the drink, thereby establishing a certain kind of link between the brand and pop music or pop culture. This strategy has attracted a good number of young adults and music lovers. Pepsi had known early on that music has a power to draw followers.

Because of this, Pepsi has earned the title for being the much “cooler” cola brand.

However, Coca-Cola has finally come up with a game plan to catch up and tap into Pepsi's target audience and hopefully gain the patronage of a better chunk of soda consumers. And this game plan also involves the use of music to connect to people, albeit in a different manner.

Coca-Cola Germany recently launched or introduced the Coke Sound Up campaign, which is a friendly and fun way to quench your thirst. The new 25cL Coke beverage cans, which was released last year and which look smaller and sleeker than the old ones, will come with a special QR code on them. We see Coca-Cola's planned use of these codes as its way of attracting the younger crowd, which is more up-to-date with technology and is more likely to have smart phones that have the ability to scan the codes.

Yet, people behind this Coke marketing strategy are choosing to keep mum and withhold certain details of the QR code and of how it will relate to music.

It is our guess, though, that these codes will lead consumers to either downloadable music or music videos, which they can play through their smartphones. Well, it has already been reported that after a QR code is scanned, German music lovers will be directed to the Coke Music Portal where they can choose from a wide selection of songs. People can then listen to music while drinking an ice-cold can of Coke.

A Coca-Cola representative mentioned that the QR codes printed on the sleek can is a multiple prong approach, which, in this case, means that they'd reach out to consumers by appealing to their different senses – taste, sight, and hearing – for an interactive multimedia experience. Soda drinkers will see the code on the beverage can and then enjoy their refreshing drink while they listen to music.

The code on the beverage can is not easy to miss or locate. The code is right next to a drum and earphone design, and it comes with simple instructions for scanning with the use of a mobile phone camera. Before they'd know it, consumers will see their phone browsers being directed to the music portal, which promises to be online all the time.
